The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) is a complicated federal leave law that guarantees certain employees up to 12 working weeks of unpaid leave per year with no threat of job loss. Under this law, employers are required to continue to provide health benefits for eligible workers just as if they were working.
Situations that qualify for FMLA leave may include but are not limited to:
- A serious medical condition that prevents an employee from working
- An employee is providing care for an immediate family member
- The birth and/or care of an employee's child
- The placement and/or care of an adopted or foster child
- An employee's spouse, child or parent is on active duty or has been called to active duty
