Benefit Express Reduces Client Health Care Costs by Auditing Dependents

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL. --- Benefit Express, an HR and Benefits administration provider, continues to respond to the economic pressures facing all clients in virtually all industries. Employers have generally relied on the honor system for health plan enrollment, and by doing so; have unknowingly covered many non-eligible dependents, such as ex-spouses, adult children, and others; which unwittingly increases organizational HC costs.

 

Benefit Express has developed a solution to this problem – a comprehensive dependent and full time student eligibility audit that:

  • Is customized to meet the employer’s audit objectives, including whether to use an amnesty period and how to handle non-responders:
  • Includes preparation of Eligibility Verification Site and signature form for employee completion;
  • Validates all required documents, including marriage licenses, birth certificates and full-time student affidavits;
  • Applies spouse eligibility rules for employed spouses;
  • Supports employee education efforts regarding the audit and plan’s eligibility requirements through a live Call Center;
  • Destructs supporting documentation; and
  • Electronically audits eligibility and automates the termination of ineligible claimants as required by each client.

     

    Results of Implementing the Solution

    Through the implementation of this solution for several clients, Benefit Express has determined that a carefully planned audit of dependents can help employers uncover ineligible members and potentially significant cost savings. Specifically, for one organization, a 5% to 10% reduction was seen in the number of covered dependents after an eligibility audit. This translated into a cost savings of up to $3,000 per plan member per year.

    While a dependent audit is typically included in the scope of services for Health and Welfare administration, it is not to the depth of or as economical as of audit that Benefit Express offers.  With the Benefit Express solution, we take responsibility for the identification of the issues, recommendations to solve the problem and ultimate execution of the steps.
